Santa Monica High School, part of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, is located on a prominent elevated site in downtown Santa Monica with commanding views of the Pacific Ocean. Much of the existing campus was built over 60 years ago with some buildings dating back to the early 1900's. In 2007 the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District began a process to modernize the campus, the most recent project being the completion of the Innovation Building in 2015 designed by R. L. Binder FAIA Architects, LLP (retired, CY team members worked on project while at RLB). CY architects is providing Planning and Space Programming for the phased re-development of the constrained 26 acre site to create a model campus for over 3,000 students. CY architects is in progress or in construction on several projects on campus including compete A&E services for a new Academy pilot program with STEM and collaborative classrooms, engineering shop, digital media lab, film classroom, new art gallery, HVAC and interior updates for 9 buildings, a new M&O building, service yards, new baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, tennis court and campus-wide signage and wayfinding and environmental graphics. Projects are in construction with completion expected Fall 2022.
